About the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário
The history of the Rosário Church in the city begins in 1876 with the idea of building it in Praça Doutor Duarte, which gave the place the name Largo do Rosário at the time. However, in 1891, Arlindo Teixeira, member of the Procurator Committee of the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, suggested changing the construction site to where Praça do Rosário is today, starting work in 1893 on land far from the urban center. The original structure was modest, with an autonomous wooden frame and adobe walls, highlighted by the frontispiece facing the old São Pedro stream and characterized by a wide central door flanked by two smaller ones, as well as windows with wooden balusters. As the urban center expanded, the church's surroundings attracted traditional families, although there was popular discontent over the modest size of the building. On the initiative of Cícero Macedo, a committee was formed to erect a new chapel that would better reflect the times, financed by local contributions, culminating in the inauguration of the new structure in May 1931 after construction between 1928 and 1931.
