About the Grande Hotel
The Grande Hotel e Termas de Araxá is a hotel in the city of Araxá, Minas Gerais. Located in Parque do Barreiro, construction began in 1938 and the inauguration took place in 1944, by then president Getúlio Vargas and Minas Gerais governor Benedito Valadares. The gardens and the entire landscaping project were created by the famous painter and landscaper Roberto Burle Marx. The project by architect Luiz Signorelli has an architectural style similar to that found in old colonial buildings in Spanish America, in countries such as Colombia and Venezuela. Its walls are covered with reddish clay, symbolizing simplicity. Internally, the Grande Hotel follows the neo-classical style, with columns, capitals and arches. The project includes restaurants, bars, a cinema and a casino, but the latter's activities ended with the ban on gambling in Brazil by President Eurico Gaspar Dutra, in 1946.
